Torchwood goes all Big Bangy

So CERN are about to test the world's largest particle physics laboratory in Geneva to see what fun stuff it will bring, either the end of the world, a new power source, increase our understanding of the creation of the universe or nothing at all.

The scientists hope to recreate the conditions a billionth of a second after the Big Bang by firing two protons in opposite direction around the 27km long underground dounut shaped Hadron Collider that straddles France and Switzerland until nearly the speed of light then crash then together.

  BBC Picture and info.

"The LHC is installed in a tunnel ranging from 50 to 150 meters underground. Particle detectors called Alice, Atlas, CMS and LHCb surround the points at which particles collide, measuring the emerging showers of particles. The tunnel crosses the French-Swiss border six times, with the particle beams making 66000 border crossings per second."

In true BBC fashion our attentions will be distracted from the boring and possibly life altering science stuff to a Torchwood special, well a radio play instead of TV.  Martha Jones is called to CERN by UNIT after scientists start disappearing but the Torchwood team (or whats left of them) are paying attention too. Fearing a rip in time space or a big people eating alien. Captain Jack, Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones must team up with there old friend Marth Jones to unravel the odd goings on at the Large Hadron Collider.

The special will be airing on BBC radio 4 at 2.15pm GMT on the 10th of September and available to download for 7 days after at the BBC Radio 4 webpage.
